KALINDI COLONY, NEW DELHI

PROJECT DETAILS

ARCHITECTURE + INTERIORS

BUILT AREA: 9,000 SQ.FT.

COMPLETION: 2010

The courtyard house is the architect’s own residence. It was designed keeping in mind the simplicity in terms of its materiality, allowing the geometries to speak for its architecture. Featuring a blend of wood and local stone, the front façade boasts a variety of intersecting geometries that add to the character of the exterior. The residence has been developed keeping in mind both traditional and modern aspects and its planning played an important role in forming its interiors. The spaces have been designed in a way that they stimulate the energies and the spiritual spirit of the house. The focal point of the residence is the courtyard which, apart from providing abundant natural light and ventilation, acts as the nucleus of the design and creates an architectural language that characterizes the residence. It is not just an abstract architectonic element but has been drafted with respect to the principles of Vaastu, which aim towards creating a positive energy balance with the space. The two masses on either side of this courtyard are connected by a passage glazed on either side, providing uninterrupted access whilst seamlessly merging the interiors with the greenery on the outside. Challenging the concept of an enclosed space or a basement, the home also features a sunken space in the basement topped with a Louvre roof system, exposing it to the ground level and the sky above; creating an interesting entry point and an amalgamation between in and out.
